Matthew Lazar is a catalyst and leader of the revival of the Jewish choral movement in North America today. He is also the founding director of the North American Jewish Choral Festival, Hazamir: The National Jewish High School Choir, the National Jewish Chorale, and SELAH, a professional vocal ensemble, as well as the founding director of Shirah, the largest independent Jewish choral society in the United States. He has directed the Zamir Chorale since 1972.
Mr. Lazar has prepared choruses for Maestros Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Guilini, Daniel Barenboim and others, and has been praised by the New York Times, along with his "expert ensembles" for performances of the music of Salamone Rossi, the first important Jewish composer. Mr. Lazar has appeared as guest conductor of the El Paso Symphony, the Milwaukee Chamber Symphony, and the Ra'anana Symphony Orchestra, and conducted a program as part of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's World Music Series. He regularly presents programs at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and in other major concert halls throughout the United States.
Mr. Lazar has served on the faculty of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and is a frequent lecturer and scholar-in-residence in communities across the United States. His most recent recordings are The Birthday of the World I and II, and A Taste of Eternity with the Western Wind Vocal Ensemble, and Chants Mystiques and Chants Mystiques Encore with Alberto Mizrahi, which premiered at the Ravinia Music Festival.
